The Sapporo International AI Film Festival is a flame.
A festival flame for experiencing and honoring the stories born from people who have taken up new ways to create,
and for kindling, from those stories, the next creators and the next stories to come.
Since the dawn of time, humans have carried stories in their heads.
A landscape never seen.
A person who does not yet exist.
A memory that won't fade.
A feeling that words can't hold.
A world you want to show someone.
Imagining has always been something anyone could do. Giving it form was another matter. Cameras, actors, crews, music, editing, CG, time, money. However vivid the world in your head, only a few could finish it as a film and deliver it to someone else.
Now, AI has broken that wall down. One person creates images from their own imagination. Creates sound. Creates voices. Brings characters to life. And raises a single story into being.
An age is beginning in which more people than ever can give their stories form.
What excites us is not AI itself. It's that people who always wanted to create but never had the means have become people who can. A student. An office worker. A musician, a painter, an engineer. Someone who has never made a film in their life can now turn the story inside them into moving images.
Not because AI creates in place of humans. Because the range over which the creativity sleeping inside a person can be carried out into the world has widened like never before.
The more widely the power to create is opened, the more one question matters.
What do you want to create?
You can make beautiful images. You can paint a vast world. You can finish a film alone. That is a real and enormous change. But that alone doesn't move people. Why tell this story? What feeling do you want to leave with the viewer? The more technology we can use, the more human the question that remains at the end.
So what we are truly looking for is not the category of "AI film" itself. It might be a film. It might be animation. It might be music, a game, an interactive experience. The form of expression can change. The technology can change.
At the center of it all stands a human being trying to tell someone something.
Film is not something you merely "watch." In the dark, a world rises on the big screen. Sound resonates through your body. Someone beside you gasps, laughs, cries. Same time, same place, one story shared with a crowd. There are moments, possible only in a cinema, when you experience a story with your whole body.
Precisely because streaming lets us reach films anytime, anywhere, a festival still has meaning. When a film arrives at that moment, the technology recedes into the background. What remains is the work, the story, and whatever is born between the person who made it and the person who received it.
What we want to see is not a race of technical specs.
What will people create, now that they hold a new power?
And how far can those stories move the human heart?
What will you create?
Show us. We'll watch every single one.
Unleash your story. Shake the soul.
The ember is already in your hands. The Sapporo International AI Film Festival opens.
